30th June Two general events
events worth noting at Buckminster this coming month.
3 Days of "Retro Fest", 6th, 7th and 8th July.
Then on Wednesday, 18th There is a Midlands Area BMFA Fly In,
R/C on 2.4Mhz only as well as control line, but no mention of freeflight.
28th June Thanks to Mick for the latest batch of front
page photographs, these of scale models at the recent Free Flight Nats.
26th June Continuing the
nostalga theme from 14th June; I found this gallery of Classic Model Aero
Engines from John Lichnerowicz. Interesting in itself, however it was the text
under the photos which appealed to me, with mentions of Wanstead Flats where I
did begin model flying after my initial trips to Fairlop.
24th June Jonathan said:- "I came across
the EAA Vintage Magazine archive online the other day; I wondered if it might
be a worthwhile link for the website - so many beautiful scale model ideas!
19th June Click the
Competitor for another "Echo from Far Valley". Includes R/C rubber
power.......
16th & 17th June Click the t/n to see
some snaps of the SAM35 event at a rather windy Buckminster.
14th June SAM 35 at Buckminster this coming weekend,
with Saturday the premier day - see the last part of the posting for 7th June
below.
To continue with the "Antique Modelers" theme.
Click for a
video taken at Fairlop in the early 1950's. I picked this up
on the esoaring.net, where there is some background
information. My particular interest is that I used to cycle to Fairlop from my
suburban London home during this period.
12th June Thanks to Mick for
the latest set of front page photographs, these from the Free Flight Nats,
showing several PMFC 1st place prize winners.
As this set have results in them click the picture to browse the
whole group in one go.
10th June June PMFC Free Flight Competition at
Ferry Meadows. Click for the
results that John sent.
He said, "Four and a half hours of intense competition, high
standards, everything a f/f comp should be. A credit to all the lads."
9th June I was taken by the
fuselage side joining method in the laser cut, Vic Smeed Pulstar, short kit
from i-Gull, who sell via
eBay.
Click the picture for the eBay link.
The American site
"Paul and Ralph
Bradley's Model Airplane Hangout" got a mention in the latest Aeromodeller,
it is in the PMFC links but I had forgotton what a useful site it was.
Another American site worth a browse is
"Retro RC" which includes
"Campbells Custom Kits" some of their items are available from UK based
Micron.
7th June No sitting in powered bathtubs this coming
Friday; here is a reminder from John:- "The next round of the f/f
championships takes place this Friday at Ferry, starting at 3.30pm and ending
with the Bernie Nichols trophy at 7pm. I should mention that, being for cabin
rubber models, the BNT is also open to scale models."
Then, during the three day Sam Fly In at BMFA Buckminster on Fri
15th, Sat 16th and Sun 17th:- "While writing, an advance notice for the f/f
comps at the SAM 35 event at Buckminster the following weekend. I shall be
running Cloud Tramp on Saturday 16th along with a precision contest for
rubber/ic/electric cabin models. Engraved trophies to the winners subject to
enough entries to pay for them. Some of you will be wondering about crops in
surrounding fields: I have a spy at Bucky, & will be able to report back
next week. At least a precision event will not be affected."
5th June Brian W passed on this video......
3rd June Enjoyable visits to Buckminster
over the weekend where the BMFA Payload Challenges were taking place.
I have always followed the challenges in the magazines and
enjoyed the reports. This year I was able to see what happens.
Manny Williamson has been organising these events for over 10
years at Elvington, for the last two it has been Buckminster, where this
weekend had excellent conditions, sunshine and light winds.
Click the picture to give you some idea of the variety of models
designed and built. Click here
for details of the competition provided by Manny Williamson on the BMFA
Buckminster web site.
A page
from Dave Shipton about the Peterborough School entry to the
competition.
1st June Thanks to Bryan for
these Youtube videos from last weekends Nats. Spot the PMFC members...
Click the t/n for Bowden, click
here for
Free Flight Scale.
30th
May Another "thank you", to Stan this time, for the latest edition of
"Slipstream". Which includes a contest report for the Auckland part of the
Cloud Tramp Challenge.
Click the cover for a .pdf download.
Just received an extra for the current batch of front page
photographs dealing with the Cloud Tramp Challenge. This one taken by Mick at
the Free Flight Nats, where Ricky Bould from New Zealand, was competing.
Click the t/n from 28th May for the full set.
28th May Thanks
to Mick for the new set of front page photographs, these all to do with with
the UK part of the Cloud Tramp International.
Last day of the SF Nats today, starting grey and overcast, not
so much wind forecast as the first two days.
Later 26th May Cloud Tramp
Challenge, message from John:-
PMFC.....................................1333 (Whithead
326) Auckland................................1255 (Mulholland 375) We
thank our friends in New Zealand for their participation and hope that the
Challenge will be taken up again next year. The Trophy will be proudly on
display at the AGM at the end of the season. John....................Oh,
and....Well done, lads!!
26th May BMFA Freeflight Nats start today. Forecast
for the three days starts windy but calms a little by Monday.
Recent CIAM Flyer was about Fred Militkey, noted in both the
model and full size aircraft world.
Click for
the .pdf. This ties in with a post made on the web site in
January 2017
24th May A continuation of Bryans information from
30th April. "I have just discovered that the
CAA have improved the
GINFO website. The website enables users to search for details such as
owners and photographs of British registered aircraft."
If you put in "ADGP" or "AEXF", the aircraft you can see in the
link from 30th April the system works.
These being 1930's aircraft I got out my cigarette cards again.
Click for the "Miles
Hawk Major" which was the closest I had to a "Miles Hawk Speed Six", the
registration from the card could be ACTO, which gives a sensible result at the
GINFO web site.
21st May Thanks to Chris we can keep up
the international theme. Click the picture to have "Echoes from Far
Valley".
I don't really need to remind you that it is the BMFA Free
Flight Nationals next weekend.
19th May More results, this time of the Cloud Tramp
International. Click to see what John sent.
16th May May PMFC Free Flight Competition at Ferry
Meadows. Click for the results
that John sent.

2nd May Thanks
to Stan for the latest edition of "Slipstream".
Click the Peanut Scale Nesmith Cougar for the magazine. Angus
McDonalds model is 43 years old and still winning competitions.
30th April Bryan passed on
some interesting news about an addition to the Shuttleworth Collection.
Click the "Speed Six" for more information.
28th April Whilst out and about on Thursday I picked
up a booklet "Airfield Trail, North Kesteven". Interesting in itself but it
also put me on to the fact that there had been an RAF Buckminster, (page
8).
Inevitably I had a look at Wikipedia and
sure
enough it had a mention. However click here for
a
map that shows RAF Buckminster North of the B676.
There was a 2nd World War airfield at Saltby, which is now a
gliding club and is further North than RAF Buckminster. The gliders and tow
aircraft can sometimes be seen from BMFA Buckminster.
Not sure how the above will help PMFC Cloud Tramp flyers when
they are at Buckminster for the Peterborough/Auckland Challenge but it is good
to have some background about the area.
26th April To echo Johns recent message:- "May I
just remind you that it's Elfs and Frog juniors at OW in 13th May (C/L bods
should be aware of BML's comps as well.) The next PMFC F/F comp, including the
Bernie Nichols Trophy Round One on the 15th starting at the new time of 3.30pm,
and that the 25" Rubber Vintage postal in under way (cards from me) and it's
4th Area on the 20th. That's not to mention the Nats, of which more later.
Also PMFC Cloud Tramp flyers are now primed for the
Peterborough/Auckland Challenge which will take place at BMFA Buckminster
sometime before 23rd May. Lets hope for at least one calm day......
24th April Another enjoyable
visit to BMFA Buckminster at the weekend got me thinking about Eaton Bray.
There is a fair bit about the enterprise on the web but one
piece I had not seen before comes from "All about the village of Eaton Bray in
Bedfordshire". Click the icon for the page, also worth following the link "D.A.
Russell and Eaton Bray" that is mentioned.
22nd April Thanks to Mick for the latest set of front
page photographs.
These taken at the first of this seasons club free flight
competitions at Ferry Meadows.

the first of the 2018 Free Flight club contests at Ferry Meadows. Thanks to
John for organsing and sending results also to Brian L for the report on the
meeting,

had some additions made. Let me know if you would like anything else
added.
9th April Thanks to Mick for the latest batch of front
page photographs, these taken at the First Area Meeting 2018.
Tomorrow is the first of the 2018 Free Flight club contests at
Ferry Meadows. See 7th April below.
7th April John reminded us earlier in the week that
"next Tuesday, the 10th, sees the first of our 2018 Free Flight club contests
at Ferry Meadows. Let's hope the weather allows us to have a good event.
(Remember that there are five meetings, from which competitors score their best
four out of five.)"
See full details in Meetings/Events on the left, which also has
a link to the new E20 competition.
Another reminder is for the Swapmeet at BMFA Buckminster on
Sunday, 15th April - see Meetings/Events on the left for directions. Plus the
yellow note at the top of the page. Also there is a two day SAM 35 Fly In at
Buckminster on the following Monday and Tuesday, again see Meetings/Events on
the left.
5th April Keeping to the
indoor theme click the Piper Tri-Pacer to see the model flying at Nijmegan last
Autumn.
Richard Crossley had articles in the February and March
Aeromodeller about this top quality model.
3rd April From the
BMFA Midland Area web site
I picked up that there is a free open
indoor flying session at Newark
organised by the Newark Indoor Flying Club, on Tuesday 17th April, which
might be of interest to PMFC members who live to the North of
Peterborough.
1st April Thanks
to Stan for the latest edition of Slipstream, click the magazine logo for a
.pdf download.
Slipstream comes from New Zealand, here
is something from Canada. Click the t/n for a well illustrated article.
30th March As a reaction to "For many of us rubber
is the only "real" way to power model aircraft" here is a link from
Aeromodeller to PB Engine Australia. Click the picture for a detailed and
comprehensive site on motor production.
28th March In the recent
BMFA News Mike Woodhouse said "For many of us rubber is the only "real" way to
power model aircraft". He then gave a link to rubber band production.
Click the picture to see the YouTube video.
Condensed from Johns e-mail:- At Ferry Meadows, the annual
Good Friday flying session begins at 10am, but since Friday is our regular
afternoon as well, the field will be ours all day.
On Saturday, the Northern Gala takes place at
Barkston. Remember to use the same entry as for the campsite at the
Nationals, & sign in.
26th March Just in case any PMFC members don't know,
here is the link to a BMFA message:-
"2018 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM BRONZE FOR GBR!" GB Team,
Mark Benns, Tony Hebb and Hans Staartjes.
Click
for full results.

Whilst Planes TV have an
11 minute video of the delivery flight to Bruntingthorpe.
24th March Thanks to Mick for the latest set of front
page photographs. These taken at Bushfield on 10th February 2018.

continues to keep busy, his latest piece is "Miniaturising FET
Timers". Click the picture for the article.
Don't forget "An E20 Competition for 2018", in the yellow block
above, which now contains the fuselage parts for the Ferry 500. Thanks to Andy
Sephton for the drawing. There is also a link to further E20
information.
20th March Thanks to Bryan who spotted it in the
Aeromodeller and copied the following from the
Modelair web site.
"Please note that the price of entry has been increased by Shuttleworth
Management for 2018. Entry is now £13 per adult per day. If you bring
proof of current membership of the SVAS or any Model Aircraft Flying Club
(MAFC) entry is £8 per day. Under 16 free."
I have added the information to the Old Warden links in
Meetings/Events on the left.
18th March I don't think I
would actually buy a DVD of an airshow but I do enjoy the trailers
issued by Planes TV.
Click the t/n for the video.
Another approach to full size aviation videos is that from
Aerocinema in America, click for the trailers of their films on:-
Lightning - - - - -
Javelin
16th March I have had a sort
out of the "Plan Suppliers and Magazine Downloads" section in Links on the
left. Removed some that were no longer active but feel sure there are others
that could be added, so suggestions welcome.
What I hadn't noticed before were the magazine covers shown at
RCLibrary,
interesting to see the styles change over the years.
The season of Winter meetings at Peakirk comes to an end this
evening with a talk by Andy Sephton. It is entitled "A winning formula for
scale models." Outdoors there are the Tuesday and Friday flying sessions at
Ferry Meadows, where there is also a Good Friday meeting.
14th March Jon continues to
investigate E20 models, click the canard for the whole web page. There are less
extreme examples.....
12th March An enjoyable finish to the
PMFC 2017/2018 Indoor Flying Season yesterday. Although don't forget the
meeting on 18th at Impington Village College
Previously Soo Modellers and friends have concentrated on
electric powered r/c models for their indoor flying, but this season there has
been a growing interest in rubber power free flight. Click thumbnail for
some examples.
10th March Thanks to Mick for the latest batch of front page
photographs. These from the "Bring a Model" club meeting in February.
5th March Last PMFC indoor flying session of the
season on Sunday 11th at Bushfield, with a BMFA scale trimming session on 10th,
also at Bushfield. Then on 18th at Impington Village College. Further details

Chris Grant for an update to the "zapper" used with FET timers for small
electric free flight.

weekend.
17th February Alex Whittaker in his Weekenders column,
from February 2018 RCM&E, chats about the Bowden contest and used some
photographs from his archives.
connection.
15th February For the last 3
years a group of GBR free flight enthusiasts have gone to California in
February. Mike Fantham has reported on each occasion via the BARCS forum. Click
the thumbnail to see how they got on this year.
A quote from Johns Tuesday e-mail, "On Friday at Peakirk the P30
National Champion, our Mick Page, will be telling us how to achieve success in
that popular class. Doubtless there will be a good deal of other free flight
talk taking place as well."
13th February Chatting to John Picton at Bushfield on
Saturday about the range of less than
130mAh batteries that Atomic Workshop have in stock. John also
mentioned the interesting items they have in their articles link. In particular
Richard Crossley's LFW 'Cato Engined' Butterfly, where he is
using 8 degrees of right side thrust for successful flight.
11th February Excellent session at Bushfield
yesterday, with lots of visitors.
There was a mystery. The spot landing for a bottle of wine was
won by Chris Grant flying a
Carbon Butterfly, a brave choice as it would undoubtably come
off worse had there been a mid-air with any of the 20 or so other models
flying.
Another Carbon Butterfly was flown but in the general chaos of
the mass flight the owner lost sight and it completely disappeared. An
extensive hunt afterwards showed it was no where at floor level and the
consensus was that it had lodged completely inside one of the girders in the
roof.
Clearing up in a garage after Bushfield I discovered "fallen
down the back" a bent and battered Aeromodeller from March 1991.
who I found in it.
9th February Jon has been very busy co-ordinating the
E20 rules for the coming season, for those who ordered them Jon said the "E20
'starter kit' packages" can be collected from the indoor flying session at
Bushfield tomorrow, Saturday.
Click for a quality information page:-

Subsequent Midland Area meetings may revert to North Luffenham.
Meetings/Events have been updated with this information.
3rd February Just heard from Bryan that Mike Stuart

Click the Helium diesel for the February
download.
28th January February
Aeromodeller came out a couple of days ago with an excellent mixture of items.

months Aeromodeller. Of interest to those building Hi Start gliders as it gives
details of C.G. and towhook positions.
26th January There have been a lot of
e-mail exchanges between Jon and those with a particular interest in E20 (Ferry
500). Also a discussion of the rules at Peakirk last Friday.
Click the icon to see the set of provisional rules that Jon has
produced as a result of the e-mails and discussion.

available to non-club members.
Back issues of the PMFC magazine, as well as "Slipstream" the
Bulletin of the Auckland Model Aero Club, can be found via the Magazine link on
the left.
20th January Even if you don't
have a particular interest in r/c large scale sailplanes and tugs the web site
is well worth a visit, in particular for the selection of newsreel clips
starting from 1910 and the wide ranging articles.
18th January Judging by the number of
adverts around at present now is the time of year to book overseas holidays.
Keep in touch with the flying part of the journey by clicking on "Ask the
Pilot".
An important session at Peakirk tomorrow:- "Free Flight
Conference and 2018 calendars."
16th January I was curious about the Sarik Hobbies
advert as I remembered that Sarik Vacform had a connection with Traplet
Publications. A check showed that Traplet Publications Ltd were still listed
with a web address of www.myhobbystore.co.uk which links with Sarek Hobbies.
12th January There was a new
timer advertised in the freeflight section of the BARCS Bulletin Board. Perhaps
a touch large for many of the PMFC models but worth a look.
Click the timer for more information. - - - -
Click for the .pdf manual.
No "Latest Updates" until Tuesday 16th January
10th January Thanks to Mick for the latest batch of
front page photographs, these all to do with the Friday evening club meetings
this Autumn and Winter.
8th January I
have not mentioned
"Sticks and
Tissue" for a long time. James Parry continues to do an excellent job.
Quality content, with interesting adverts at the end. I was particularly taken
by the graphic style of the one from Aeronatical Models of York. Click the
thumb nail for a larger version.
6th January Click the autogyros for some
snapshots of models flown at Bushfield today.
An enjoyable session when PMFC were pleased to welcome members
of other clubs.
4th January A particularly
interesting mailing from Vulcan to the Sky Trust over the Christmas period,
including superb photographs and some absorbing background to full size
aerodynamics.
2nd January Dates are filling in nicely
for 2018. Check out "Meetings Events" on the left, in particular the SAM links
below the calendar.
First two of the year are Peakirk on Friday, with Bushfield on
Saturday.
Talking of calendars,
click for a .pdf
download that can be printed and stuck to form a triangle that sits on top
of a computer monitor, that is if you are not using a laptop, phone or
tablet.....
